Players who have scored hat-tricks in the Kolkata Derby, including Edmund Lalrindika and Bhaichung Bhutia

Edmund Lalrindika scored a hat-trick for East Bengal against Mohun Bagan in the Durand Cup final on 23rd august, 2026, joining a short list of players who have recorded hat-tricks in the Kolkata Derby: Amiya Deb, Asit Ganguly, Bhaichung Bhutia, Chidi Edeh and Kiyan Nassiri.
The Kolkata Derby, contested between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, has produced rare individual scoring feats from as early as 1934 through 2026 in one of Asia’s enduring football rivalries. The earliest recorded Derby hat-trick came in the Darbhanga Shield’s Bengal zone/India section semifinal in 1934 when Mohun Bagan’s Amiya Deb scored four goals. In August 1937 Asit Ganguly struck a hat-trick in the Raja Shield Final to help Mohun Bagan to a 4-0 victory.
Bhaichung Bhutia was the first East Bengal player to score a hat-trick in the fixture, achieving the feat in the 1997 Federation Cup semi-final as East Bengal defeated Mohun Bagan 4-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium. His sequence in that game included a header from a corner for the opener, a second in which he dribbled past two defenders and the goalkeeper before finishing, and a third completed through individual skill.
Chidi Edeh produced a notable individual display for Mohun Bagan on 25th October, 2009 in an I-League match, scoring four goals as the Mariners beat East Bengal 5-3. That four-goal performance is listed among the most devastating individual displays in derby history.
Kiyan Nassiri entered the Derby goalscorers’ list in January 2022 when he came off the bench for Mohun Bagan and scored three times in an Indian Super League encounter, a 3-1 win over East Bengal; his first came in the 64th minute and the other two arrived in stoppage time, making him the first player to score a Derby hat-trick in the ISL edition.
Edmund Lalrindika, the Mizo-born forward, completed his hat-trick for East Bengal in the Durand Cup 2026 Final within the first 45 minutes, with the third goal recorded in the 44th minute. In the match a blistering run involving Edmund around the 12th minute led to a strike from 20-25 yards that beat Vishal Kaith, and roughly ten minutes later he finished a move started by a Dani Ramirez pass after receiving a lateral ball in the D-box and dribbling past two or three defenders and Vishal Kaith to score.
Edmund’s three goals in the Durand Cup final on 23rd august, 2026 helped East Bengal lift their 17th Durand Cup title, and he became the second East Bengal player after Bhaichung Bhutia to record a hat-trick in the Kolkata Derby.
