Samson absent as Kerala Cricket League opens at Greenfield on Thursday

The Kerala Cricket League will begin at the Sports Hub Greenfield stadium on Thursday with Calicut Globstars taking on Thrissur Titans, but Sanju Samson will miss the entire competition because of prior commitments. The KCL enters its third season in Thiruvananthapuram and returns during August’s festival period after being launched as a platform for State cricketers to showcase their talent.
Almost all teams arrive with revamped rosters and start on ostensibly even footing, while defending champions Kochi Blue Tigers have retained the core players who delivered last season’s title. Captains named for the tournament include Saly Samson, Vatsal Govind, Krishna Prasad, Sachin Baby, M.S. Akhil and Rohan S. Kunnummal.
Organisers expect the absence of Sanju Samson to present a challenge in drawing spectators, with the league’s biggest star unavailable for the entire competition. Despite that gap, several franchises have retooled their squads at auction and in direct signings to bolster depth and hitting power.
Kochi Blue Tigers have held on to the key performers from their championship campaign and enter the season with what the league described as a balanced squad featuring several power hitters. That continuity positions them as the side to watch among teams that kept their core personnel.
Aries Kollam Sailors arrive as the competition’s most consistent team from prior editions but face a transition under new captain Vatsal Govind. Alleppey Ripples made high-profile purchases at the auction, spending ₹11.80 lakh on Sibin Girish and paying Sachin Baby ₹10 lakh before naming him captain, as they seek improvement after disappointing earlier campaigns.
Thrissur Titans, to be led by all-rounder M.S. Akhil, will rely on a young brigade and aim to advance beyond the semifinals for the first time. Trivandrum Royals, which struggled last season and failed to connect with fans, have assembled a new-look squad under Krishna Prasad that will target a stronger showing.
Calicut Globstars list several match-winners, including captain Rohan S. Kunnummal, Salman Nizar, Krishna Devan and Abdul Basith, but the side has a record of faltering in key games and will be intent on reversing that trend. With one of the deeper squads on paper, Globstars will be watched for their ability to convert talent into results.
The opening fixture is confirmed: Calicut Globstars meet Thrissur Titans at the Sports Hub Greenfield stadium on Thursday, kicking off the third season of the Kerala Cricket League.
