Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty eliminated in Asian Games 2026 opening round by Thai pair
Defending men's doubles champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were beaten 21-12, 19-21, 21-14 by Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeratsakul and Peeratchai Sukhphun in the opening round of the Asian Games 2026 in Japan on Friday. The defeat removed one of India’s leading medal hopes and was described as a major setback for the host nation’s prospects.
Rankireddy and Shetty entered the match as the reigning champions; their opponents came into the contest ranked World No. 36. The Indian pair took the first game but were unable to maintain control across the three games, despite attempting to balance defence and attack with Chirag marshaling the backcourt while Satwik looked to deploy his smashes. That tactical approach failed to yield the desired result in Japan.
The Thai duo repeatedly used speed and movement to force the defending champions into awkward positions, turning the encounter into an extended defensive contest for the Indians. Once Satwik and Chirag failed to re-establish their attacking rhythm, their defence came under sustained pressure and Teeratsakul-Sukhphun steadily seized momentum. The shift in control during the second game proved decisive for the overall outcome.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s ongoing shoulder issue was highlighted as a complicating factor, described in the match report as carrying both physical and mental consequences for his play. Recovery from surgery was characterised as non-linear, with multiple issues likely to surface during rehabilitation, and the question of whether to undergo surgery was said to be affecting performance. The account noted that on better days the prospect of surgery can seem unnecessary, whereas on poorer days — exemplified by this opening-round loss — an extended layoff of six to eight months to return with a healed shoulder might be considered.
After the match Rankireddy said they “lost the game mentally” and added that playing back-to-back in the team event had left them tired; the opening-round contest lasted an hour and eight minutes. Chirag Shetty acknowledged that the duo “were not at their best” during the match.
The pair have been described in the report as the most successful Indian men's doubles team in badminton history, and India’s campaign at the Asian Games 2026 had been characterised as its best so far. Their elimination brings an abrupt end to their defence of the Asian Games title.
