Shai Hope’s unbeaten 102 drives West Indies to 250 chase in Ranchi

Shai Hope struck an unbeaten 102 to steer West Indies to a record chase against India in Ranchi in the second T20I on October 9, 2026. West Indies reached the 250 target and won by six wickets with nine balls to spare.
India set the contest up by making 249 for five. West Indies went into the chase needing 250, and Hope compiled 102 not out from 45 deliveries, hitting six fours and seven sixes. The victory gave West Indies the win in that match.
The tourists began poorly when Mayank Yadav removed both Kamil Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer in the opening over, and he later had Rovman Powell caught for 24. Despite that early collapse, Hope combined strike rotation with aggressive strokeplay to keep the pursuit alive.
The turning point arrived when Hope put on 120 runs with Sherfane Rutherford for the fourth wicket. Rutherford scored 84 off 37 balls, striking seven fours and seven sixes, before Kuldeep Yadav dismissed him.
Romario Shepherd provided support in the closing stages as Hope maintained the initiative. Hope brought up his century with a six off Axar Patel and finished the chase.
Statistically, Hope’s 45-ball hundred was the joint-fastest T20I century against India, matching Jacob Bethell’s 45-ball hundred in the T20 World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium earlier this year. The 45-ball effort also stands as the second-fastest century by a West Indies batter in T20Is, behind Johnson Charles’s 39-ball hundred against South Africa in Centurion in 2023, and made Hope the third West Indies player to record multiple men's T20I centuries, joining Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis.
West Indies’ successful chase of 250 is their highest in T20Is, surpassing their previous best of 236 for six against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2015, and it is the second-highest successful chase in men's T20I history after South Africa’s 259 against West Indies in Centurion in 2023. The Ranchi match produced a total of 501 runs, the second-highest aggregate in men's T20Is behind the 517 scored in the 2023 Centurion meeting, and featured 79 boundaries, the third-highest tally in a men's T20I (behind 81 in Centurion in 2023 and 80 in Sofia in 2025 between Gibraltar and Bulgaria).
The victory levelled the five-match series at 1-1. The result came in the second T20I of the series.
