Shea Charles joins Fulham for £30m to become Northern Ireland’s most expensive footballer

Shea Charles completed a £30m transfer from Southampton to Premier League side Fulham on 11 August 2026, becoming the most expensive player in Northern Ireland history. The 22-year-old midfielder arrives at Craven Cottage after a pathway that began in Manchester City's academy and included senior international breakthroughs.

Charles joined Manchester City's academy as a seven-year-old and emerged during the 2021-22 season when, as an 18-year-old, he helped City win the Premier League 2 title playing alongside Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Nico O'Reilly. He received his first Northern Ireland call-up for the June Nations League window in 2022 and made his international debut as a late substitute against Greece before making a senior club appearance. Ian Baraclough, then Northern Ireland manager, showed belief in him by awarding that early cap.

Northern Ireland youth coach Gerard Lyttle praised Charles in 2021: "Shea has been so, so impressive during my time working with him. I have never seen anyone better on the ball than this kid." At that stage Charles was still playing at centre-back and had not yet made a senior appearance; Lyttle added: "Honestly, he is so calm, I actually haven't seen him get out of second gear yet and that is no joke - there is even more in him," and "He plays with such a calmness, sees a pass, breaks lines, is technically very good, can hit long and short and can compete physically. He is just a proper ball-playing centre-back and a real good kid as well. "As he goes up the levels he needs to keep progressing, but from what I've seen of young Shea he definitely has all the attributes."

At Manchester City he trained with Rodri and Fernandinho and made his Premier League debut in May 2023 as a second-half substitute against Brentford on the final day of the season after City had wrapped up the title; by that point he had six international caps. Reflecting on training with senior players Charles said in 2022: "When we train with the first team the standard is so high and we are always learning, every day," and "With the likes of Rodri and Fernandinho, it is tough but enjoyable."

A month after his City debut Charles signed a four-year contract with Southampton and made 32 appearances as Saints won promotion back to the Premier League. He spent a subsequent loan at Sheffield Wednesday, where manager Danny Rohl said: "He's a young, high-potential player – the pity is that he is not our player." Midway through that loan he was given the Northern Ireland captain's armband by Michael O'Neill just 10 days after his 21st birthday, becoming the youngest captain since Terry Neill in 1963; O'Neill stated: "Shea has got the attributes to play at the highest level of the game, and the temperament to do so, and that is what you look for as a captain," and "Whether he has the armband or not, he is going to be a leader on the pitch."

Back at Southampton in the Championship last season Charles scored six goals, his best return to date, including the winner against Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals, a strike against Liverpool at Anfield in the EFL Cup, and a goal in the Championship play-off semi-final win over Middlesbrough that would have sent Saints to Wembley before the club were denied a shot at the top flight after the Spygate drama. Fulham signed Charles for £30m after he had been strongly linked with Leeds United, with Alvaro Arbeloa, the former Real Madrid and Liverpool defender, now the club's head coach.
