Sreeshankar, Patturaj and three Indian hurdlers reach Asian Games athletics finals in Nagoya
Murali Sreeshankar, David Patturaj Solomon, Santhosh Tamilrasan, Vithya Ramaraj and Anu Raghavan advanced to athletics finals at the Asian Games in Nagoya on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Their progress came in the men’s long jump, men’s 400m hurdles and women’s 400m hurdles qualification rounds.
Indian athletes recorded qualifying performances across jumps and hurdles during Sunday’s session in Nagoya. The men’s long jump qualifying round produced two Indian qualifiers, while the 400m hurdles heats saw one man and two women move through to their respective finals. The day also featured action in the decathlon and the women’s 20km race walk.
In the men’s long jump qualification, Murali Sreeshankar produced a best effort of 7.84m to finish second and qualify for the final. David Patturaj Solomon recorded a jump of 7.62m to place seventh and secure his spot in the men’s long jump final.
Santhosh Tamilrasan advanced from the men’s 400m hurdles by finishing second in the opening heat with a time of 49.61 seconds. In the second heat, Yashas Palaksha pulled up before clearing the first hurdle and was recorded as DNF (Did Not Finish).
Both Indian women progressed automatically in the women’s 400m hurdles after finishing second in their respective heats; Vithya Ramaraj clocked 55.73 seconds and Anu Raghavan timed 55.84 seconds in those races.
In the men’s decathlon, Tejaswin Shankar sat third on the leaderboard with 6571 points with two events remaining. The women’s 20km race walk final ended unsuccessfully for one Indian hopeful: Manju Rani finished sixth in 1:40:17 while compatriot Priyanka was disqualified.
Sreeshankar, Patturaj, Santhosh, Vithya and Anu will contest the finals of their events at the Asian Games, and Tejaswin Shankar has two decathlon events remaining on his schedule.
