Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, after sustaining injuries in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second division match at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez stadium. The fixture was abandoned after Owono was sent off.

CD Tenerife issued a statement announcing the death at 8:00 a.m.: "Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe this is real, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesus de Miguel Alameda," the club said. "No words can ease the pain, nothing can lessen this great feeling of sadness. Our thoughts are with the family, his close friends and Tenerife fans, who today are grieving over this terrible news." De Miguel, 30, had joined Tenerife in the summer of 2025 from Castellon and had been at the club just over a season, helping the team gain promotion to the second division.

The collision occurred towards the end of the game when de Miguel was fouled in the middle of the pitch by Equatorial Guinea international goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who had raced out of his goal to try and clear the ball. The teams were level at 2-2 at the time of the incident, and Owono received a red card. Spanish police sources told AFP that an investigation into what happened has been opened, under judicial supervision.

Medical staff treated de Miguel on the field and he was stretchered off before being taken to hospital and placed in intensive care. Spanish media reported that de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated; Tenerife later stated that his condition had "worsened neurologically" prior to his death.

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who is Andorra's majority shareholder, wrote on social media: "I am so deeply sorry. Rest in peace, Jesus." FC Andorra expressed their "most sincere condolences" to De Miguel's family, team-mates and Tenerife, while Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and other Spanish clubs also issued messages of condolence.

High-profile reactions continued across sport: Kylian Mbappe wrote on Instagram, "Immense sadness, there are no words," Lionel Messi wrote on Instagram, "There are no words... rest in peace," and Rafa Nadal wrote on Instagram, "What a terrible sadness... I'm with you from the bottom of my heart." Real Madrid held a minute of silence before their training session on Tuesday (November 3). La Liga side Espanyol postponed the presentation of their new coach Eder Sarabia to Wednesday (November 4), and some clubs elected not to train.

Top flight chief Javier Tebas and Spanish Sports Minister Milagros Tolon also posted messages of condolence: "Today we all share the terrible pain of an irreparable loss," wrote Tebas on X. "We share in your grief," wrote Tolon, offering her "deepest condolences to [de Miguel's] family and loved ones", as well as Tenerife, the players and staff.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation announced it would postpone Tuesday's (November 3) matches in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina "as a gesture of respect and solidarity." UEFA said a minute's silence would be held before Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matches this week.
