Vinicius Jr signs new Real Madrid deal as Premier League struggle to land established superstars
Vinicius Jr has signed a new contract at Real Madrid's Bernabeu until 2032 on 7 August 2026, despite interest from Arsenal, reinforcing questions about why established global superstars move away from the Premier League. The deal is cited as a reminder that, although English clubs have vast collective spending power, attracting proven Ballon d'Or contenders remains uncommon.
Since the Premier League began in 1992 only three players have won the men's Ballon d'Or while representing an English top-flight club: Michael Owen in 2001 for Liverpool, Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 for Manchester United and Rodri in 2024 for Manchester City. The league, however, is regularly credited with providing an environment where elite talents develop into global stars, and it has less trouble signing and retaining elite centre-backs and goalkeepers than the most sought-after forwards and attacking midfielders.

The contemporary Premier League model frequently prioritises assembling 18-22 elite players and buying proven domestic talent, as shown by multiple transfers between English clubs for fees above £100m involving Alexander Isak, Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson, Moises Caicedo, Declan Rice and Jack Grealish. Players coming from abroad with large reputations, such as Liverpool's Florian Wirtz, have sometimes arrived with their best years still anticipated. Practical attractions in Spain — climate, lifestyle and linguistic and cultural familiarity for many South American players — and the status of Real Madrid and Barcelona as destination clubs continue to draw top names.
Real Madrid and Barcelona have continued to outbid or out-appeal Premier League clubs for some of the game's most coveted players: Jude Bellingham moved from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid rather than returning to England after leaving Birmingham City and remains the only player to represent England's senior men's team during the Premier League era without making an appearance in the competition; Kylian Mbappe joined Real Madrid after links elsewhere; Neymar chose Barcelona over Premier League interest when leaving Santos in 2013, attracted in part by the chance to play alongside Lionel Messi. Harry Kane later left Tottenham for Bayern Munich despite sitting 47 goals behind Alan Shearer's Premier League record of 260.
Erling Haaland's situation underscores the enduring pull of Real Madrid: after City signed him from Dortmund at 21 and his development in England, his father Alfie told DAZN during the 2026 World Cup, "He's happy at City, he's got a long contract… but any player wants to play for Real Madrid." Both Real Madrid and Barcelona have been interested in Rodri this summer, and Manchester City rejected Barcelona's £38.5m bid for Rodri, leaving his immediate future as an active transfer question for English football.
