Vithya Ramraj wins 400m hurdles bronze in Nagoya after mixed relay silver

Vithya Ramraj secured bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya on September 28, clocking a personal best of 54.75 seconds. The 28-year-old had helped India claim silver in the mixed 4x400m relay four days earlier, on September 24.

Ramraj improved on the 55.68 she ran when taking bronze at the previous Asian Games, with the 54.75 in Nagoya recorded as a personal best. She is now a double medallist in Nagoya, adding an individual podium finish to her contribution in the mixed relay. The previous edition also saw her equal the Indian national record of 55.42 seconds in the heats before finishing third in the final.

In the mixed 4x400m relay on September 24, Ramraj ran the anchor leg, closing strongly to overtake Vietnam and bring India home in 3:14.46. Her late move on the final straight left India 0.08 seconds clear of Vietnam and secured the silver medal that the team successfully defended from the previous edition.

The 400m hurdles final in Nagoya produced the personal best that earned Ramraj individual bronze. Her 54.75 stood behind the two athletes who finished ahead of her and was faster than her previous Asian Games final time of 55.68.

Mariam Kareem of the United Arab Emirates took gold in a Games-record 54.31 seconds, with Kazakhstan’s Adelina Zems claiming silver in 54.58. India’s other finalist, Anu Raghavan, placed fifth with a time of 55.88.

Ramraj’s pair of medals in Nagoya underline her dual role at these Games as both an individual competitor and a relay finisher for India. Her mixed relay anchor leg produced the decisive pass that delivered silver, while her hurdles run yielded a season-best personal time for an individual podium.

The Nagoya campaign has now given Vithya Ramraj medals in two different settings: a team silver from the mixed 4x400m relay and an individual bronze in the 400m hurdles, both recorded during the Asian Games 2026.
