VVS Laxman to attend all India senior selection meetings, BCCI confirms

VVS Laxman will attend every senior selection committee meeting for the India cricket team, the BCCI confirmed on 2026-10-07. The board said the move is intended to ensure selectors receive accurate updates on injured players from the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
India's management and selectors are preparing ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup and have been seeking a settled combination, but recent months have been disrupted by injuries. Those absences, particularly in the bowling unit, have made it difficult to give players extended runs and build continuity. India's recent ODI series against the West Indies exposed the effect of unavailable personnel, with several players missing and others receiving opportunities as a result. With the World Cup approaching, the board said clearer information on fitness and recovery timelines is needed for selection decisions.
The BCCI has altered its process so that Laxman, who heads the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, will attend all senior selection meetings going forward. Laxman had already been present at the meeting that picked India's T20I and India A squads, the board noted.
The change aims to remove any potential mismatch between selectors and the CoE, which monitors injured players and their rehabilitation, allowing Laxman to provide direct updates. “VVS Laxman will henceforth attend all senior selection committee meetings to ensure there is no miscommunication between selectors and the COE,” Saikia told PTI.
Board officials framed the decision as a practical step to give selectors the correct information before finalising squads, including expected return dates and assessments of readiness. The selectors, the BCCI said, need clarity on when injured players are likely to return and whether they are fit to play.
Devajit Saikia, the BCCI secretary, stressed the measure is not intended to alter transparency of the selection process. “The move is intended to ensure there is no miscommunication and selectors get accurate information to make right decisions,” Saikia said.
The board will implement Laxman's attendance at senior selection meetings immediately as India fine-tune squad choices for the run-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
