Warwickshire bowl Leicestershire out at Edgbaston as Foxes to appeal 27-point penalty
On day one of the Rothesay County Championship Division One match at Edgbaston on 24 September 2026, Warwickshire's bowlers reduced Leicestershire to 125 and effectively relegated them, though Leicestershire intend to appeal a 27-point penalty.
Warwickshire began the fixture with the prospect of securing the title; Leicestershire chose to bat first in pursuit of the batting points needed for survival but were dismissed for 125. Ben Cox made 33 and Sol Budinger 27 for the visitors, while Ethan Bamber returned 4-42 and Chris Woakes 3-20. By the close Warwickshire had reached 130-4, Sam Hain unbeaten on 37 and described as within reach of 1,000 runs for the season; the points reflected Warwickshire (3 pts) leading Leicestershire (1 pt) by five runs.
The visitors' decision to bat first played into Warwickshire's strengths and the Bears continued a pattern of bowling sides out cheaply, having dismissed opponents for under 200 on seven of nine occasions this season. Warwickshire struck early, with Sheridon Gumbs bowled by Bamber's fourth delivery and Rishi Patel trapped LBW by Woakes, and Steve Eskinazi then taking a catch at point.
Leicestershire slipped to 15-3 amid selection and availability issues as overseas player Nick Kelly had returned home injured and Hamza Shaikh was unavailable against the club he is still technically on loan from. Jonny Tattersall and Budinger then fell in consecutive deliveries, with Tattersall becoming Olly Hannon-Dalby's 370th first-class wicket for Warwickshire and Budinger edging the next ball from skipper Ed Barnard to second slip.
Ben Cox and Ian Holland offered resistance either side of lunch but Bamber struck again after the interval, removing Holland when he edged to third slip and Ben Green when he nicked to first. A Woakes outswinger then accounted for Cox, and the tail folded with Ajaz Patel dragging on a pull to Bamber and Josh Hull giving a simple return catch.
Warwickshire's reply began poorly when Rob Yates played on to Holland's seventh delivery. Dan Mousley hit four quick boundaries before changing his bat and edging the next ball from Holland to third slip; Will Young edged Ben Green to first slip. Vansh Jani began with two crisp boundaries but then skied a mow at spinner Ajaz Patel, while Sam Hain provided a composed central innings and Ed Barnard added a flurry of boundaries, a five off the helmet nudging Warwickshire ahead just before stumps.
Warwickshire started the day knowing that a total of 14 points or more from the final match would be sufficient for them to win the County Championship, leaving Leicestershire's demotion subject to the outcome of their planned appeal against the 27-point penalty.
