Warwickshire move to top of Division One after eight-wicket win over Essex
Warwickshire beat Essex by eight wickets at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground in Chelmsford on day two of the Rothesay County Championship Division One, moving to the head of Division One. Manav Suthar's 5-75 in Essex's second innings, his second five-wicket haul of the season, was central to the two-day victory.
The scoreline read Essex 134 and 189; Warwickshire 191 and 138-2, with Zen Malik finishing 51 as Warwickshire collected 19 points to Essex's 3. Warwickshire last won the County Championship title in 2021.
The 24-year-old spinner Suthar, who made his debut for India three months ago, finished with 5-75 in the second innings to take his Championship season tally to 26 wickets in five matches and help dismiss Essex for 189, leaving Warwickshire requiring 133 runs for victory.
Zen Malik powered Warwickshire's chase, striking four sixes in a rapid half-century before falling at deep mid-off while attempting a fifth; Dan Mousley and Sam Hain then saw the visitors across the line during the sixth of the extra overs taken to produce a positive result.
Sam Hain had earlier rescued Warwickshire after they slipped to 12-2, occupying the crease for 57 overs to compile an unbeaten 88 and help establish a first-innings lead of 57; Matt Critchley eventually removed Olly Hannon-Dalby to finish with figures of 4-54.
Essex's second morning required two injury substitutions: captain Tom Westley damaged a finger and was replaced by Luc Benkenstein, while Shane Snater's unspecified leg injury brought 17-year-old Jack Auld into the side. Auld had taken 3-67 on Monday in England Under-19s' two-run ODI win against Pakistan and claimed his maiden first-class wicket with the fourth ball of his professional career when Rob Yates edged to second slip.
Essex briefly cancelled Warwickshire's first-innings advantage through Paul Walter, who scored 42 off seven boundaries before lofting to cow corner where Chris Woakes took a tumbling catch; Dean Elgar, on what was his final Chelmsford innings before retirement, made 29 and was given a send-off after popping a catch to short leg. Warwickshire celebrated several key dismissals: Ed Barnard's relief at Charlie Allison's inside edge that allowed wicketkeeper Kai Smith to complete a catch; Ethan Bamber taking his seventh wicket in the match when Noah Thain, promoted to number three in the injury reshuffle, was beaten for pace and had his stumps rattled; Critchley following four balls later nicking Suthar to Smith. George Bell was lbw attempting to work Suthar through midwicket, Benkenstein had his off-stump flattened by Woakes, Mitch Killeen steered to second slip for Woakes' second wicket in five balls, and the innings ended quickly when Cook and Auld fell lbw to Suthar and Woakes respectively, Woakes finishing with 3-33.
Warwickshire must now await the results of the matches involving Somerset and Nottinghamshire before knowing who will lead the Division One table into next week's final fixtures.
