What happens next for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United?
Marcus Rashford, who made six appearances for England at the World Cup, is expected to rejoin Manchester United’s squad at their Maynooth training camp next week after a season-long loan at Barcelona, with his return likely complete unless a late development intervenes.
Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan when he was unveiled in July 2025 and left his old club’s number 10 shirt to new arrival Matheus Cunha. He scored 11 goals and provided 14 assists as Barcelona won the La Liga title, the Spanish Super Cup and reached the Champions League quarter-finals. Barcelona opted not to trigger the £26m buy clause on the 28-year-old — a decision initially viewed as a possible negotiating tactic aimed at arranging another loan — and Rashford posted a farewell note to Barcelona on 30 July. At his Barca unveiling last summer he said: "[Manchester United] is in a period of change and have been for a while," and added, "I don't have anything bad to say as it has been an important part, not just of my career but my life, so I was grateful for the opportunity. I wish them all the best and hope they are successful in the future."
If his return follows the pattern of the club’s other World Cup players, who have come back about three weeks after their final tournament match, Rashford will be involved in next week’s Maynooth training camp in the Republic of Ireland. That schedule would put him in contention for the friendly against Leeds at Croke Park on 12 August and a match against an AC Milan side managed by former boss Ruben Amorim in Wroclaw on 15 August, subject to Michael Carrick’s assessment of his readiness with only a couple of days’ training behind him.
Manchester United’s recruitment since the end of last season has included the signing of Youri Tielemans for £35m on 14 July, and the arrival of Anthony Gordon followed by the 23 July signing of Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund. Those additions appeared to remove the prospect of Barcelona taking Rashford on another loan. The club maintains there will be no cut-price deal or loan, while Premier League and overseas clubs have made inquiries and are expected to continue doing so until the transfer window closes on 1 September. A day after Rashford’s social-media farewell, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick said: "He is a fantastic player and a fantastic person," and added, "The team miss him, I will miss him, but it is life. This is what we have to accept."
Rashford sits 15th on Manchester United’s all-time goalscoring list with 138 goals and requires 17 more to equal Paul Scholes in 10th place; 32 of those goals came with Michael Carrick as a team-mate. Rashford and Carrick were team-mates for three seasons up to 2018, and Carrick later coached him and managed him for three games during a 10-day spell in 2021 between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure and Ralf Rangnick’s interim appointment. The pair are said to get on well, and there is a view within the club that they could form a more sustained working relationship.
There has been reported friction between Rashford and Amorim over training performances at times this year, which some see as evidence Rashford had lost the enjoyment of playing for his boyhood club, while others argue he remains too valuable to discard and could benefit from support in Carrick’s squad. Any potential return under Amorim would have evoked comparisons with Jadon Sancho’s brief reconciliation with Erik ten Hag, which lasted through a pre-season trip and a seven-minute Community Shield appearance before Sancho moved to Chelsea on loan.
Carrick has not spoken to the wider media since United returned to pre-season training, and a planned partially open session in Maynooth early next week has been cancelled, meaning there will be no external cameras to capture Rashford if he does return as expected. Clubs will continue to pursue interest in him until 1 September, but Manchester United have reiterated there will be no cut-price departure.
Unless something significant happens in the coming days, Rashford’s return to Manchester United will be complete.
