What the opening five Premier League rounds have revealed
Brighton beat Arsenal 3-0 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday in a result that punctuated the first five matches of the Premier League season as the competition pauses for a near three-week break entering a four-game international window. The result is one of several developments that have emerged from the opening rounds.
Arsenal had been looking largely dominant in the early weeks and a win at Brighton would have given the Gunners a club-record equalling eighth consecutive win in all competitions to start the season. The 3-0 defeat was Arsenal's heaviest league loss since May 2023 and their first league reverse by more than one goal since October 2024. After the game boss Mikel Arteta said: "That's not going to take away what the team has done and the boys have done in the last six or seven weeks since coming back from the World Cup." He added: "What we've done, the way we've competed and the amount of games we've won has been remarkable - but this is a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level."
Manchester City's start under Enzo Maresca has erased early doubts following Pep Guardiola's departure, despite the Community Shield defeat by Arsenal, with City winning all five of their Premier League matches and seven in a row in all competitions after Sunday's 5-3 win over Sunderland. That string of results has taken City three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table. Maresca said: "In the press conference before the game, I said I expect a very tough game," and added: "Then we also conceded two or three goals but we have learned a lot in these eight weeks and this is good."
Brighton and Brentford have been among the season's surprise performers, with Brighton sitting third, two points behind Arsenal after the 3-0 victory at the Amex, and Brentford fourth, one point below Brighton. Brighton have now beaten the reigning Premier League champions at home in each of the last three seasons, and when BBC Sport asked Pascal Gross if Albion were in the title race he laughed and said "no". Brentford remain unbeaten after five games under Keith Andrews, their former set-piece coach, and their recent 3-0 home win over Chelsea was singled out as their most impressive result.
Leeds are also on nine points and occupy a place described as a potential Champions League spot, while Andoni Iraola's Liverpool and Everton sit just below them on goal difference. The fortunes of newly promoted sides have varied: Hull City are eighth after five games with their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle their first loss, Ipswich are 11th, and Coventry, who lost their first four matches without scoring, recorded a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest but remain in the relegation zone on goal difference.
Manchester United's decision to appoint club legend Michael Carrick after a stint as caretaker follows a pattern the club has used previously, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the equivalent role in 2019. After a summer in which Carrick had time to work on the squad, United have won only once in the league and have five points from five games, their joint fewest at this stage of a Premier League season. They go into the international break on the back of a 1-1 draw with Fulham in which a Lisandro Martinez own goal gave Fulham the lead before a late, deflected Matheus Cunha strike denied Fulham their first win of the campaign; ex-United captain Gary Neville said on Sky Sports: "I've watched Manchester United since the age of five and that's the worst 15 minutes I've ever seen. "Absolutely pathetic. I've never seen such a lack of effort."
Tottenham sit 19th after Saturday's 3-2 loss to Aston Villa, having finished 17th in each of the last two seasons, their lowest consecutive finishes since 1977-78, and following a summer in which the club spent £302m and made two high-profile loan signings. The squad overhaul affected defence and midfield in particular and left the side with one senior striker, Dominic Solanke, who "has only scored 12 Premier League goals in over two years at the club," the article notes. Manager Roberto de Zerbi commented: "We have to put on the pitch something more than we are putting," adding: "Football is tactical but it is blood, it is fighting, it is first one on the ball. We will suffer until the next game." Chelsea, meanwhile, have made major summer changes including signing £117m attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers and new first-choice keeper Emiliano Martinez, both arriving from Aston Villa; Chelsea have been involved in high-scoring games with 22 goals in their five league matches, more conceded than scored, and lie 10th, a tally that does not include their 6-3 Carabao Cup win over Leeds.
The Premier League will resume after the international window, giving clubs an opportunity to regroup during the near three-week break. Manchester United and Tottenham are scheduled to meet at Old Trafford on 10 October.
