Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando fined 25% of match fees after on-field confrontation
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka seamer Asitha Fernando were each fined 25% of their match fees following a heated exchange at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground during the first day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and India on August 23, 2026. The International Cricket Council imposed the penalties after reviewing the incident that occurred on the morning of the match.
The confrontation began immediately after Jaiswal was dismissed by Fernando, with the two players exchanging words and moving into close proximity before teammates intervened and separated them. Both team managements sought to play down the episode at the time, but the ICC subsequently examined the footage and brought charges under its disciplinary code.
The ICC said both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to 'inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person. In addition to this (the fine), one demerit point each has been added to the disciplinary records of (Asitha) Fernando and Jaiswal. Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft (match-referee).'
The board classified the incident as a Level 1 breach of the Code of Conduct and imposed the monetary penalty of 25% of each player’s match fee as the principal sanction. The fines were levied after the players acknowledged the charges during the match-referee’s process.
Published details state the report was issued on August 24, 2026 at 03:32 pm IST from Colombo, and an accompanying AFP photograph captured Jaiswal confronting Fernando following the dismissal on the first day at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.
Both players now carry one demerit point on their disciplinary records following the acceptance of the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft, concluding the ICC’s formal action in the matter.
