Asian Games 2026: Gulveer Singh wins 1500m silver in Aichi-Nagoya

Gulveer Singh won the silver medal in the men's 1500m final at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on September 28, 2026, recording a personal best of 3:36.72. It was his second silver of the Games, coming after his runner-up finish in the men's 10,000m where he clocked 28:29.38.

Best known as a 5,000m and 10,000m specialist, the 28-year-old remained tucked behind the leaders for most of the 1500m before making his move on the bell lap and producing a strong sprint down the home straight. He pressed Japan’s Kazuto Iizawa to the line but finished 0.37 seconds adrift as Iizawa took gold in a Games-record 3:36.35. Japan’s Nagiya Mori completed the podium in 3:37.92.

Gulveer lowered his previous personal best by more than three seconds with his finishing kick in the final 300 metres. During the race he found space on the outside to launch his decisive move. The quicker tempo and tactical positioning required in the 1500m contrasted with the pacing of longer races, and his adaptation to that faster rhythm was a key factor in the closing stages.

Earlier in the week he converted a bronze from Hangzhou 2023 into silver by finishing second in the 10,000m in 28:29.38. That result came before his 1500m medal and marked an improvement on his previous continental performance in the longer distance.

Gulveer’s 1500m silver pushed India past the 40-medal mark in Aichi-Nagoya, taking the contingent’s total to 45 medals — 4 gold, 20 silver and 21 bronze — and placing the nation 12th in the overall standings. Athletics and shooting have supplied the majority of India’s podium finishes, while retained golds in cricket and kabaddi were also recorded.

The Indian athletics contingent has won nine silver and 10 bronze medals so far at the Asian Games, with gold remaining elusive, and several boxing semifinals and track events remain on the schedule that could affect the final medal tally.
