Dinesh Karthik warned on October 10, 2026 that India’s fielding standards must improve after their six-wicket loss to West Indies in the second T20I in Ranchi.

India posted 249/5 in Ranchi, with Sanju Samson scoring 82 off 41 balls, but West Indies reached the target with nine balls to spare as Shai Hope remained unbeaten on 102 off 45 and Sherfane Rutherford made 84 off 37 to level the five-match series 1-1. Karthik said fielding has been a recurring problem for the side despite recent successes, adding: “But fielding has been an issue for some time now.”

Karthik questioned the decision to part ways with the previous fielding coach and said the newly appointed coach will be under scrutiny, stating: “Your job is to make sure Team India fields better than it did before. If you're not able to do that, you will face the heat.” India appointed Subhadeep Ghosh as their men's team fielding coach in August 2026, replacing T Dilip after the BCCI decided not to renew his contract.

Karthik acknowledged Ghosh's background while reiterating the pressure attached to the role: “Being part of Team India is always a challenge, and he's a talented fielding coach. He's been around the block for some time now, having been part of the India A team. He was also the fielding coach of the Andhra team.”

He also highlighted specific technical shortcomings he expects the new coach to address, saying: “I think he should figure out a way to get the pacers to stand in the right positions and make sure they hold on to their catches.” The Ranchi match provided a concrete example when Mayank Yadav dropped Rutherford on 38, allowing Rutherford to continue an innings that later became pivotal.

Rutherford went on to share a 120-run partnership with Hope for the fourth wicket, a stand that turned the chase; Karthik and India’s captain have both pointed to dropped catches and poor fielding as recurring issues. After the third ODI in Mullanpur, captain Shubman Gill admitted that dropped catches and sloppy work in the field had hurt India during the series, despite India winning it 2-1, and in the final match West Indies chased India's 351/7 with Shai Hope scoring an unbeaten 162 in a five-wicket victory.

Karthik warned that the decline in standards is pronounced and must be corrected ahead of India’s upcoming schedule, saying: “But, in general, you have to say that Team India's fielding standards have dropped, for sure, in the last couple of months. They will need to pick it up because it's an important aspect if they want to win the big tournaments as well.” India have the remainder of the West Indies T20I series, a multi-format tour of New Zealand in October and November (five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests), ODI series against Sri Lanka in December and Zimbabwe in January 2027 before the 2027 ODI World Cup, which begins on October 2, 2027; India are scheduled to face Australia on October 7 and Pakistan on October 10.
