India clinched five medals on Day 5 of the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on September 24, including two in athletics, taking the country’s overall total to 17 after the day.

Naorem Roshibina Devi secured silver in the women’s 60kg Wushu event, adding to a bronze in 2018 and a silver in 2022 to become the first Indian player to win three medals in Wushu; Satnam Singh and Salman Khan took bronze in the men’s double sculls, while India failed to reach the podium in the other four rowing finals it contested on Thursday.

The athletics programme produced two medals: Vishal Thennarasu, Vithya Ramraj, Manu Saji and MR Poovamma won silver in the 4×400 mixed relay after Bahrain broke the Games record to claim gold, with Vithya Ramraj lunging in the final 10 metres to secure silver, and Seema Kumari won bronze in the women’s 10,000m after leading at the 2000m mark before Yavi Winfred of Bahrain increased her pace in the final 2000m to take victory.

Shooting yielded mixed outcomes as India failed to win a medal in the men’s 10m Air Pistol event and no Indian reached the finals of the men’s individual Air Pistol; by contrast, Anantjeet Singh Naruka and Parinaaz Dhaliwal earned bronze in the mixed team skeet, having eliminated the Qatar pair who hold the world record, and one member of that Qatar pair won gold in the men’s individual final.

Team sports brought notable results: the men’s hockey team beat South Korea 8-2 in a league game, and both the men’s and women’s kabaddi teams finished the league stage top of their groups and will contest the finals scheduled this Saturday; in squash Abhay Singh and Veer Chotani won their men’s singles round of 16 matches, Tanvi Khanna and Anahat Singh won their women’s singles matches and are drawn to meet in the quarter-finals, and the pair of Joshana Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar defeated Suraj Chand and Shameena Riaz in mixed doubles round of 16.

Table tennis saw Manush Shah win his men’s singles match, while Diya Chitale/Yashaswini Ghorpade and Sreeja Akula/Syndrela Das advanced with round 2 wins in the women’s doubles and are set to face Chinese pairs in the next round; in fencing CA Bhavani Devi lost in the round of 16 to Rao Xueyi, who went on to win bronze, Shreya Gupta exited in the round of 16 in women’s sabre, and Sumit Kundu’s campaign ended in the third round when an injury forced him out while he had been leading after two rounds.

Additional individual results included Sakshi Chaudhary losing to a Kazakhstan opponent in boxing, Parveen advancing by walkover after her Tajikistan opponent failed to appear, India making limited progress in canoe sprint, Paritosh recording two wins and two losses in the Puyo Puyo Champions eSports event, and Pranati Nayak finishing sixth in the women’s vault; Indian swimmers competed but did not finish among the medalists on Day 5.
