India won 28 golds at Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou; key winners named

India sent a 661-member contingent to Hangzhou, China, for the Asian Games 2022, which took place from September 23 to October 8, 2023.

The Indian team was appearing in its 19th consecutive edition of the continental tournament. The 28 golds were, by some margin, India's best performance at the Asian Games in terms of gold medals. Those 28 golds exceeded the 16 won at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games and the 15 won at the 1951 New Delhi Games.

Shooting was the most successful sport for India, producing seven gold medals. Athletics contributed six gold medals. Archery added five gold medals to India's tally.

Squash, cricket and kabaddi each yielded two gold medals for India. Badminton, tennis, equestrian and field hockey supplied one gold apiece. These results, combined with the top-producing sports, formed the 28 gold medals India won.

Jyothi Surekha and Ojas Deotale each won three gold medals in compound archery events. Archery accounted for five of India's gold medals. Both athletes achieved their titles in compound categories.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar won two golds along with a silver and a bronze in rifle shooting events. Neeraj Chopra won the men's javelin title. Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won India's first badminton gold at the Asian Games.

Harinder Pal Sandhu won two golds in squash. Abhay Singh and Dipika Pallikal also won squash gold medals. Anush Agarwalla secured a gold and a bronze in equestrian events.

India clinched a total of 106 medals, finishing fourth in the final medal table. The haul included the tournament-best 28 gold medals for the country.
