Jhathavedh Subramanyan credits work with R. Ashwin for changes to his leg-break

Jhathavedh Subramanyan, a 26-year-old leg-spinner for the Vida Kovai Kings, spoke about technical changes to his bowling while at the Tamil Nadu Premier League match in Natham, Dindigul on August 12, 2026, and said his apprenticeship with R. Ashwin has been central to those adjustments.

Since beginning to work with R. Ashwin around August last year, Jhathavedh said he has been bowling "20 to 25 overs" in a session and using the increased volume to experiment with his action in an effort to make his leg-break a bigger weapon.

He described a specific change to his load-up, saying he is now gathering the ball closer to his body; "That’s helped me rip the leg-break a little bit more without hampering the amount of turn for my googly. And it’s helped me get the ball more over the stumps," he said.

Jhathavedh said the alteration has shifted the balance between his stock leg-break and his googly, which previously produced more turn, and pointed to his dismissal of N.S. Chaturved against Madurai Panthers as evidence, describing how he outfoxed "TNPL’s fastest centurion" with a leg-break that the batter charged down and was stumped.

Reflecting on that delivery, he added: "It was a leg-break that turned almost five degrees. In previous seasons, I was turning my googly a lot," he said.

He also spoke about the working relationship with Ashwin, saying: "I was really enjoying those sessions. There’s a lot of fun and a lot of smiling, which is very important, because, of course, as we all know, he has a great sense of humour." He noted his personal connection to the moment: "As a kid growing up in Hong Kong (his country of birth, which he’s represented), it was an absolute dream to meet Ashwin in the first place, and now to have him as my coach is incredible," he said.
