Mikel Arteta has signed a new contract to remain as Arsenal manager until June 2030, the English champions announced on Wednesday, following last season's Premier League title. That championship was Arsenal's first in 22 years.

Arteta took charge of Arsenal in December 2019, replacing Unai Emery while the club sat in 10th place in the Premier League. He ended his playing career in 2016 after five years at Arsenal and then joined Pep Guardiola's coaching staff at Manchester City as an assistant. Three years after leaving playing, he returned to Arsenal to take his first role as a senior manager.

Under Arteta, Arsenal returned to the Premier League's top five in 2021-22 and then finished runners-up for three consecutive seasons. The team also reached the Champions League final under his stewardship, but lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. Those results preceded last season's breakthrough domestic title.

The club's hierarchy has backed Arteta's long-term rebuilding plan. Arsenal strengthened key areas of the squad through signings including Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Ben White and goalkeeper David Raya. "The investment has paid off," the club said.

Arteta has recorded a 62.05 per cent win percentage across 361 matches as Arsenal manager, the best figure among the club's full-time managers. "This is an important time in Arsenal Football Club's history. We want to create a winning era together with Mikel," Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick said. "It's a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal," Arteta said in a statement. Arteta, 44, said he believes the club's best years are still ahead. "We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together," he added.

Arsenal are currently second in the Premier League. They will return from the international break with a home match against Leeds United on Saturday.
