On 20 August 2026, Southampton rejected an Aston Villa bid worth around £18m plus add-ons for defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis. The offer arrived as Villa pursued reinforcements during their summer recruitment activity.

Harwood-Bellis has been at Southampton since 2023, initially joining the club on loan. He has one England cap, earned in a 2024 Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland. The defender began his career in Manchester City's academy but never made a first-team appearance for City. Southampton finished fourth in the Championship last season before the Spygate scandal ended their play-offs.

Aston Villa submitted the bid of approximately £18m plus potential add-ons, which Southampton turned down. The rejection leaves the transfer unresolved between the two clubs.

Villa's need to recruit has been heightened by other developments: England defender Ezri Konsa is set to join Arsenal for more than £50m. The Konsa exit forms part of a wider reshuffle in Villa's squad following their European campaign.

Since winning the Europa League in May, Villa have sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Lucas Digne to Paris St-Germain. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins, the club's record Premier League goalscorer, have also been linked with moves away.

Villa have added reinforcements as well: this week they signed goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri. Other arrivals this summer include midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves and forward Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.

Southampton are understood to want around £25m for Harwood-Bellis.
